Cities are full of possibilities. A vacant office building can be used temporarily for living. A school’s courtyard can be kept open for all the children in the neighbourhood. A street can be closed to cars on Sundays and become a large playground… The studio ‘Urban Life Cycles: Porto’ is a way to look at streets through the lens of time.
Just-do-it actions can add new rhythms and variations to the use of a street. Temporary interventions can help filling the gaps in a long-term planning process. The question is: How can we keep urban spaces alive? Leaving space for experiment, keeping design simple and open, thinking of an adaptable strategy, establishing flexible agreements among parties. The answers are countless – yet they need to be tested and effectively organized. The studio is approached as storytelling. That is, crafting the story of a street through time, while investigating its future transformation possibilities. You will test the possible intervention on a street in Porto and thereafter optimize the proposal in the last weeks of the design studio.
