The structure of Brussels’ inner city is crystal clear. The old inner city is limited by a circular road in the shape of a pentacle and divided by Boulevard Anspach. This boulevard runs north-south and is completely dominated by car traffic. The boulevard separates the city of tourism and business from the city of workers and residents.
Two years ago Boulevard Anspach was closed to car traffic as an experiment and has not been reopened yet. During the summer, the Brussels people occupied this space with spontaneous picnics, festivals, temporary playgrounds and catering. However, a structural plan for these spaces was lacking. Today, the occupation has taken on a more permanent character, yet the need for a more future focused plan is still there. What can we learn from this experiment?
The studio ‘Boulevard Anspach BXL’ will focus on the development of a plan for this new central public space of the inner city. You’ll use the open air laboratory of Boulevard Anspach to test new ideas. Not only will you design the public space, but you will also develop detailed sections to study the transformation of the adjacent buildings.
