The Boulevard Anspach can be compared to a living ecosystem. The life of the boulevard exists within a deep complex network of places people and traffic. The blocks along the boulevard have seen much changes to in history. The moving of the tram  underneath the street and now the ruling out of the cars in the streets. However the blocks themselves are kept as relicts of history and don’t seem to change to the demands of the today inhabitants of Brussels. Stores are going bankrupt due to less visitors and the boulevards transformation makes spontaneous events trough the boulevard no longer possible. Keeping the historic buildings intact seems a reaction to the first attempt of high-rise blocks along the boulevard. These are offices stacked on top of a public plinth. The monofunctional buildings are large aliens in a lively mixed street.

The demand for housing and offices in the citycenter of Brussels could be used to take the Boulevard to a new level of meaning for the city. The closed blocks need to be opened up from the inside to connect more to the crowded shopping streets around the Market Square. This will make the boulevard easier to reach. Then inside the blocks will arise new public spaces which are informal places of stay compared to the boulevard and streets around the existing blocks.

The courtyards will be the access point to higher levels in newly built floors on top of the existing blocks. Between the roofs cape of the existing buildings and the new volume will be public or semi- public spaces to overlook the Boulevard on roof level. The new volumes are a mix of functions such as apartments, shops, offices or schools. On some blocks the public can access the top level for a view over the valley to look back at the kings palace or the low income neighbourhoods on the other side.
