Palazzo's could be the answer to life in the city of tomorrow. A palazzo is a large living city block where a group of families lives in. This idea comes from the Middle Ages, where rich families wanted to live in Italian cities. To protect themselves from robbery they came up with the plan to build a large set of houses together. What makes these buildings so special are the staircases. They function as the main entrance of the building instead of the usual outside facade of the building.

In my design of these staircases, I used an open construction to make the stairs more visible. At the point of view from the inner bailey, the journey in the staircases becomes visible. With minimum use of materials and decoration, the visitor is nowmore in tune with the stairs. The small opening in the centre of the plinth course is the entrance to the nearby streets of the palazzo. To enter the staircases, visitors must enter the two doorways nearby the main entrance. This is the starting point where the stairs are welcoming the visitors for their journey.
