Barely exceeding your average market stand height, SHELTER
sits in the center of the Binnenrotte. Considering its width of
seven meters and lengths of 30 meters, it’s presence on the
square is remarkably humble. The figure embodies a meter-
high solid volume levitating at eye-level, impeding ones
horizontal view, though not obstructing the spatial awareness
of the square. The contour of the free form suggests direction -
it is shaped to follow the longitudinal and transverse orientation
of the busy square. A similar free form, though slightly
shifted, determines the outline of an excavated space 80cm
below ground. A space defined not by the extrusion of the
vertical, but rather the manipulation of the horizontal plane.
The steepness of the steps into the space varies, encouraging
entry from the quiet side of the square. The shape’s slab edge
works in a similar matter - shaped either steep and wide or
elegant, thin and welcoming. The interior space, though open
on all sides, feels intimate. Slender, circular steel columns are
situated freely under the mass, deviding the large space into
two. Being off ground-level – away from the busy square and
out of sight – brings a sense of privacy and seclusion. Furthermore,
the shelter from the downpour or summer heat provides
a welcome refuge in the public domain.
