Program: - Metro library + Offices - Sports hall 9x14m + Changing rooms - Theatre / polyvalent festival space + Foyer If the building is closed or there is a small activity that needs more privacy, the building is small and closed off. This is the space of the building with a controlled climate. If the building is open and there is a big event, the building can be opened up. The construction has a lot of repetition, efficiency, functionality, moving parts, etc. (the same characteristics of a machine). The building serves its public by responding to individual and group desires, allowing free and unpredictable behaviour. The adaptivity of the building is also reflected in future use: when there’s need of more space – the pre-fab walls can just be copied further along the metro line. The project is all about transparent boundaries between interior and exterior, not only for a flexible program, but also for climatic comfort. The intermediate spaces have a smaller thermal isolation. They naturally improve and temper the extreme conditions by creating a buffer volume. By placing the walls a curtain distance from the metro line – light “gaps” provide daylight and extra in-between space. These triangle spaces have a different quality and atmosphere than the waterside of the building. The existing roof of the metro line gives an extra dimension to these spaces. A grid of concrete columns defines the extra space that can be used in-between and under the metro line. A boundary of plants shelters the space. By placing the elevator shaft into one of the in-between spaces - 3 movements (metro, elevator shaft and the reference project) come together in one spot and people who use the elevator will be attracted by the activities of the building.
