Living and working in a 'productive city'.

The contaminated soil in M4H Rotterdam produces fibre for use in biobased building materials, and gets cleaner with each production cycle.

In Galileipark, -the location of the former gasplant-, now grows the hemp plant.

Hemp fibre is produced by a proces of seeding, growing, harvesting, retting and decorticating. The fibre is then mixed with water and lime, to create hempcrete. This hempcrete can be processed further into hempcrete bricks, or it can be applied as insulation material to indoor floors, walls and roofs.

Having this biobased production plant within the 'productive city', offers advantages for the inhabitants. They can find jobs in the hempcrete plant and they can apply the insulation and building materials to their own homes in a do-it-yourself way, which will empower them to take control over their own energy bill.

The photo-remediation by hemp, is part of a cleaning and reviving concept for the bigger M4H area. Living in a traffic free ,forest-like environment is connected by a lively 'ecotone' zone with (work)shops, a market, offices and a mobility hub, to the working area which is also accessible for trucks.
