My design revolves around the different scales of collectivity. The aim was to shape the collective in different ways, in order to attract the broadest possible group of future residents. For example, one person can find the collective in his own home by sharing living spaces with housemates, and the other can have his own home but chose to meet up somewhere else in the building. Using a grid, a set of homes was created that range from XS to XXL. Some more standard and some more focused on the collective. By placing a wide variety of homes in the building, space can be provided for a diverse group of residents, each with their own way of living in this collective building. And room can be made for atypical housing solutions that respond to the demand from residents who are often forgotten. For example, there are apartments where single residents can live together instead of living alone in a house that is too large and too empty. Or an apartment where a family can live together with a grandparent who can no longer live independently. Or a teen who does not want to leave the house yet but does need his own place.
By varying the different scales per floor, an interesting mix of residents is created who can meet each other in the gallery or in one of the collective facilities. In addition to the standard laundry rooms per floor, there is a separate facility on each floor that promotes meeting between the floors. Such as the bike storage and mini supermarket on the ground floor, a communal kitchen on both the first and third floor. There is also a study /flexwork space and multifunctional space great for parties. All this is centered around the courtyard where the wide galleries provide space for meeting and appropriating the outdoor space. A conscious decision has been made to orient the apartments and their living areas towards these galleries and courtyard, to ensure that they are a lively, attractive place. With the exception of the communal functions, those are orientated towards the outside. They differ in materiality, using glass to make it even more accessible than the apartments. Each communal function has a large balcony, which can be used by the residents as their outside space and enjoy the sun and sometimes the view on the water. Creating a building where collectivity is present in all scales and people can meet each other all around their home.
