Set-design is about world-building, about translating narratives to a physical form. In this studio we will look at film, set-design and scenography and learn from their techniques. We will design the set for a scene from a literary source. This set aims to represent in one or more images a section of the book. We start by a careful reading of the source material, followed by a phase of collecting fragments and details from existing spaces. These found parts become our main resource in the design for the set. The parts are combined, transformed and staged to form a new whole. We will focus on model making as a design and research tool, working on large scale models throughout the duration of the studio. Finally the models will be staged and photographed.
