DUALITY
The current, changing situation
brings with concern and wonder. We
will have to incorporate the chan-
ging elements that have a major im-
pact on our living environment. Wa-
ter is one of the most important. The
source for our hydration, cooling
and source of food. But at the same
time, it threatens the places where
we live. There is a duality of some-
thing compelling and astonishing at
the same time.
REFLECTION
Because besides threat, it brings
calmness and reflection, playful-
ness and, moreover, a natural mo-
vement in the middle of the city. The
first step towards change is to rai-
se awareness and reflection on our
current actions. What does it mean,
to actually experience the differenti-
ation of the level?
THE DRAINAGE OF EUROPE
Noordereiland in a wider perspec-
tive, is a place that is influenced by
various phenomena
from the global water
system. We find the island about
thirty kilometers before the river
Nieuwe Maas encounters the sea.
Both rainwater, groundwater and
meltwater from the mountains
in Europe discharge here. The
sea is so close that the tides and
global seawater rise have an
enormous influence on the water
level around the island. It’s the drai-
nage of Europe.
FLUID QUAYS
When we zoom in, the quays
of the Noordereiland create a
hard boundary between water
and country. But this limit is not as
hard as it seems; the quays have
already been flooded twice this
year. One could argue that the quays
are fluid rather than the hard boundry
they seem to be. To become aware
of future changes, we will have to
reflect on the current situation by
making it tangible.
MOVEMENT
The pavilion pavilion of the current
works on the existing, constantly
changing and moving situation. The
floating pavilion is focused on the
perception of the senses. It
moves in a horizontal direction
by flowing and waves. During
the tides, the pavilion moves
vertically. The position of this pavili-
on, will always be different and mo-
ving. The highest point it can reach
is equal to the highest point on the
island. These movements of
the water are experiencable on
the pavilion in a tangible, visual
and tactile way. It creates a set of dif-
ferent relations with the water, focu-
sed on the perception of the senses.
Does experiencing the current
move us?
