For so long we have trusted and relied on our surrounding as it is built and set in stone today. This environment will have to change with the increase of climate change and will need rethinking, adjusting and adapting to an era of new conditions. The urban fabric we know today connects our daily routes through the ground floor. Expecting our sea level will rise due to climate change, these connections will be lost for some places. One of these places is Noordereiland in Rotterdam. An island in the heart of the city yet separated from it by the Maas. Connected to the north and the south of the city by one almost straight physical connection in the eastern part of the neighborhood. A visual connection to the city can be experienced from all around the quays. At the same time in the heart of the island, this visual connection disappears. The only thing reminding one of that is the bridgeheads that look out above the housing blocks. A community, already experiencing flooding in recent years and yet committed to the place, their home. What infrastructure will be left in light of a scenario in which the water will have risen to a point that the ground floor will have vanished under a carpet of water? How can inhabitants that wish to stay still access their houses on higher floors? The proposal anticipates this upcoming challenge and therefore focuses on the places that will unlikely be influenced by the water: the rooftop level. They will become the base for a new route through the island. This new network of paths will provide a different type of accessibility and infrastructure. The intersection of this path will be small vertical ascending points, the pillars of the whole structure, in which the path changes from horizontal to vertical. Their open structure offers connections on various heights which can be used to create extra connections to the houses themselves. Anticipating implies that something can be done before the expected moment comes in place. In an earlier phase, the ascending points can already be placed on the island. The foot connects to the ground floor in the existing situation and can be used as a podium or bench. The top floor can be used as a viewing platform. How will this new connection affect Noordereiland?
