The Kralingse Plas is a much-used, popular place in Rotterdam that offers space for various recreational activities and brings people together. The lake forms a central spot, connecting various surrounding landscapes. There are several bustling places for recreational use (beaches), but there are also places that emphasize the silence of the area and contribute to the ecological value of the area (forests, quiet gardens and open meadows). Various recreational routes run around the Kralingse Plas, including walking-, cyclingand deckingpaths that extend far over the water.

To contribute to the recreational value of the area, a design has been made for a pavilion on the north side of the Kralingse Plas. The pavilion is made in its entirety from sustainable, wooden materials, so the object flows naturally into the landscape context. The wooden pavilion is positioned on an open meadow, surrounded by woods and gives a sense of security: being in an oasis of tranquility on the edge of the city. At the same time, the pavilion offers a view of the Rotterdam skyline, which emphasizes the feeling of escaping the hectic pace of daily life. The pavilion connects mercilessly to route structures in the area.

By means of various experiments on the basis of rapid model studies, a desirable form language for the volume was sought. At the same time, the potential interaction and integration of the object with the environment was examined.

Ultimately, a modularly applicable, easily scalable form was chosen, consisting of an alternation of closed, open and semi-open cubes, which alternate in an exciting, washed-out manner. The design language of the pavilion ensures that, at certain angles, the object explicitly invites visitors to enter the object, but at the same time makes it possible to withdraw and relax once inside. It is a place where you can work, daydream, play, enjoy a drink, watch others and peacefully sit in the sun.

The pavilion consists of three levels of 50m2, where different places and functions alternate: exhibition spaces, two stairwells, a workspace and two toilets onthe ground floor, an exhibition space and workspace on the first floor and a bar with terrace on the top floor. There is intentionally no clear routing within the object; the pavilion is characterized by wandering and surprise around every corner. It forms a labyrinth for the unhurried, curious visitor where there is something to discover everywhere. It is a mix between architecture and art.

Each side of the pavilion has a different view and has unique views that are framed within the object. Playing with the incidence of light in the semi-open blocks and by means of the use of pergolas designed along with it enhances the playfulness of the volume.

The semi-open stairwells on the ground floor, as entrances to the object, are immediately recognizable from the various approach routes in the area. The stairwells can each be opened on one side during the day and serve as illuminated art objects in the evening. The shell of the entrance blocks offers protection and establishes relationships without detracting from the appearance. The lantern effect ensures that the object is also experienced as surprising in the evening.

The design process and the interpretation of the design are explained by means of a series of photographs.
