The Primary colours art school is a primary school with artists in residence. Children can benefit from seeing art, seeing art being made and making art themselves in many ways. It stimulates their curiosity and above all their creativity. The Primary colours art school is a primary school with artists in residence. Children can benefit from seeing art, seeing art being made and making art themselves in many ways. It stimulates their curiosity and above all their creativity. It helps develop 'both sides of the brain' and there are many tools to be found in various forms of art to help understanding other disciplines like maths and physics. To profit as much as possible from these benefits that art can offer, I designed a school that not only dedicates space to the artist and the display of his or her work, but also offers spaces where both worlds come together. These are In Between Spaces where children and artist can interact and learn from each other. Next to that, children can also learn from just watching the artist work. Therefor I designed several visual connections between the classrooms and the artist studio's. On the first floor for example, children can easily look down into the studio from the outside balcony or their classroom windows, both 'safe' places, while feeding their curiosity. Furthermore these windows and balconies on the first floor enable northern light to enter the studios and classrooms as much as possible.

The school is located in Zuidwijk, Rotterdam, on a plot bordering the busy road called Slinge on the south. More to the north side of the plot are smaller roads, green areas and mainly housing blocks. Therefore the entrance to the artist part of the school is on the south side, where passers-by can have easy (visual) access to what the artists display. And of course, if wanted, kids can also display their work. The school entrances are on the north and east side of the building, where traffic is much slower and where there is plenty of space for parents to stop and park to drop off their kids or pick them up.
