The European Union is a relatively young institution which lacks a clear [historic] identity. This project aims to translate the significance of the EU through the design of its office buildings in the city of Brussels; making its value more visible in the everyday city-life and for the whole of Europe.
The project consists of three parts; the design for an office building of the DG Economic and Financial Affairs (1), a contemporary monument representing the work of the DG (2) accompanied by a once-a-year parade through the streets of Brussels (3).
The most important space in the building is the publicly accessible 'lobby'; an flexible space where the public domain blends in with the office domain of the DG. The 'public' structure is materialised in travertin and consists of over-dimensioned columns and beams. The structure is tilted three degrees in comparison with the steel office structure; resulting in structural collisions and interferences, symbolizing the friction between the electorate and the European Union.
