The Binnenrotte is Rotterdams biggest square located in the center of the city. People by foot and bike are crossing it in all cardinal directions. With its whooping buildings marking the square, noise of trams, cars, screaming market venders this buzzy area has a lot to take in. Resting here seems hardly possible as one will always be disturbed or distracted by the many things going on.

Standing in the center of the square one will notice a small pavilion sitting in the ground on level with the Laurenskerk. The rhythm of the pattern of the square is interrupted as it hits the surface of the building. One line of red bricks is aligned around the Portland Stone walls as if the square made room for the pavilion.
The transition from the busy Binnenrotte to the inside space of the small building is created through openings in the walls which are facing the south, in the direction of the center of the square, the east and to the west, picking up the diagonal line of the intersection where its placed. These broad entrances give the visitor a short feeling of standing in the wall before entering the inner space. Gasps from the outside already show small pieces of what will open up on the inside:
A garden lying within the chalk stone walls and pavement underneath the open sky. Different types of flowers like red torches, purpletop vervains or white heathers, are swaying in the wind next to a selection of green yellow grasses and shrubs. Waterdrops gently fall from a bronze water tap into a small bronze sink attached in a small cut out in the only wall actually facing the garden.
The garden fills the space with life and creates a steadying sphere. Stone benches aligned to the wall surround the garden and offer a seat to anyone who feels like taking a moment of contemplation either in conversation or in thoughts.
