It’s close to midday. Rush hour has come and gone, leaving the Binnenrotte square empty. The wide open space is clearly confined by a colorful collection of buildings imposing themselves around the square. One by one, these buildings seem to want to express their importance to the city while at the same time merging together as one unified front.

But not all seem to have this need to merge. In fact, one object in particular doesn’t seem attached to the city at all. It is as much of a sculpture as it is a building, though its shape can’t be measured or identified. If it was to be labeled, it would come closest to a badly drawn sphere. Although it looks like the object might have fallen from the sky, the precision in which it is placed proves otherwise. The object is loosely covered with stone scales or slabs. As a result of their irregular shape and placement, small gaps are formed - revealing parts of some sort of structure beneath them. On each stone a silver rivet shines, giving the dark and earthlike structure a manmade value. Where the mass pushes into the square, the pavement is replaced by gravel.

The way the two entrances look take away any shred of doubt about this building being a natural occurring object. Strips of silver colored metal are folded around the edge of the slabs, forming the entrance and marking the relation between the outer and inner structure. Inside, the primal shape is translated into a logical grid structure that densifies towards the stone shell. A path leads from the entrances to a square in the center, but seeing the low-density grid around the path, one can hardly tell where it begins or where it ends. The hollow sound of the gravel clattering against the metal structure fills up the alienating space. Looking up from the square, an irregular shaped piece of sky is revealed, lighting up the dim interior space. Around it, the structure becomes visible, while the rest stays hidden in the dark.
