The Binnenrotte, a long central city square that stretches from Blaak station on the bottom-end towards the tunnelpark at the top-end. The busy Meent street cuts through the Binnenrotte creating a smaller top-end square. The central natural stone pavement of the Binnenrotte ends and begins on this square. Along this pavement at the foot of the square, stands a tall slender steel-tower, turned at an angle, it rises out over the adjacent red/brown brick buildings. The front sides of the tower overlooks the Binnerotte and Meent street, as the backside defines the inner area of the top-end square. The latter is further supported by the lower steel roof that leads on towards the tunnelpark. Both structures; tower and roof are one unity representing the connection and transition between the inner-city and park.

The slender steel columns of the roof are placed organically from one another. The roof beam construction also has no apparent logic. This free organic structure does bare a curtain tension around the tower as it tries to adapt to the towers structural rhythm. Whereas the roof structure is an open continues space, the columns of the tower are spaced at an even distance with a narrow opening, creating a transition into the central space of the tower.

Within this space the busy Meent street and strong market smells are still very present. A monolithic steel staircase leads up towards. Structurally the staircase keeps the long steel tower columns in place, in turn they hold up the staircase. Daylight shines through the windows and  gaps in the steel plate cladding creating sharp lines that fold over the interior elements. On the way up three windows provide a preview of what’s to come. A steel bench wraps around the inner side of the viewing platform. Here at the top, distance is created from the Binnerotte, allowing you in a more peaceful setting to take in the 360 degrees viewing experience of the inner city of Rotterdam.
